Frisco Highline Trail Hot

Filed under: General — Joel @ 1:11 pm
I started out a little later than I would have liked at the Springfield parking area. I ran out 9 miles (a couple of miles north of Willard) and started back before the heat really picked up. By 16 miles I hit a wall and had to walk nearly a mile before finishing somewhat strong. A better pace than my 16 mile run last week.
When I took off in the morning the only breakfast I had was a couple of power bars. I had 3 gels, and 3 gatoraide bottles along with a camelbak full of water. By the time I was finished I was starving. Not wanting to stink up the house, I headed straight for the shower. Because my legs were a little sore, I cranked the temperature of the water up. I remember suddenly feeling like I needed to throw up, then yelling Amy, followed by finding myself on the floor as I had passed out and fallen out of the shower. Thankfully, Amy opening the door gave me a cool blast of air and I felt great…just a bruise on my elbow. Lesson learned…eat before showering!

At the Risk of Losing You…

Filed under: Debt — Joel @ 1:06 pm

…and to continue to provide some updates here, I am starting to post my runs and blog about my running. Amy says that you will unsubscribe if I do this, but if I’m writing nothing what does it matter.Financially speaking, things are going well and continue to be steady. We are approaching $300,000 of debt eliminated. Someday I will settle down enough to write an update. This weekend we are moving all of our stuff into storage. The Army is keeping me busy moving around the next two months. In September we should get a new duty location. No reason to pay rent when the Army is paying for a place to stay.More updates to follow…including the running updates.

Bravo Two Zero

This is an incredible book about personal courage and determination. Andy McNab describes his eight man mission behind enemy lines in Iraq during the gulf war. Infilled by helicopter northwest of Baghdad, their position is compromised by a goat herder. This sets in motion a series of hit and run battles and an incredible escape attempt as they lost radio contact and were forced to literally run for Syria. In an eight day escape and evasion, they travel over 180 miles on foot; 3 are killed, 4 are captured and 1 makes it to Syria. The 4 captured SAS Soldiers are beaten and tortured for days before spending a few weeks in prison prior to their release.

After finishing the book, I discovered three other books are out there concerning this mission. Apparently, there is controversy over the truth in some of McNab’s claims. In examining these discrepancies, it doesn’t change my opinion about the book. The claims are concerning who made some of the fatal errors and what the size of the enemy elements were that they faced.

Looking at the discrepancies, I think it is likely that McNab’s inexperience was to blame for many of the errors he puts on one of his dead team members. It is also very difficult to estimate the size of an enemy force when you are in contact and literally running for your life, so it is also likely the forces they faced were smaller than he described. I chalk these differences up to the fog of war and don’t believe McNab is intentionally trying to make himself look more heroic. No one disputes the distances they ran or the torture they went through. Read this book and focus on what they overcame…it makes your current situation very small.

One warning, the language is rough and not appropriate for children. McNab chose to write this himself instead of telling his story to an author who transcribed it…and it shows. Still worth reading; check it out today!

Who Moved my Cheese?

I read this entire book yesterday evening. Originally I feared it might be a little cheesy (no pun intended), but it actually ended up as a must read. I don’t recommend every book Dave does; for instance I think QBQ is too elementary, although his principle is right…the book just stinks (I know, I didn’t say it then, but I do now).

This is an easy read that anyone should be able to relate to. Set aside two hours and head over to Barnes & Noble or pick up a copy and read it today. I certainly relate to Haw…tell me who you are!

Troop Trail Run

Filed under: General — Joel @ 7:00 pm
I enjoyed a 5 mile run on the troop trail at Ft. Leonard Wood today at lunch. The soreness in my legs manifest itself after 2 miles…my splits confirmed this. All in all, it felt good to run hard again…I love that the weather is finally warming up!
