Thomlinson For Sheriff

It’s official; Gene is running for Sheriff. He made his announcement in the rotunda at Greene County this morning. If you can’t tell by the post, I am endorsing him for this position. Unfortunately some of my friends have already thrown their support behind another candidate, but that is okay; we will still be friends after the August primary.

I love politics and can’t wait to get home and help with his campaign. I have worked for Gene for about five years of my life and he has been my friend for well over ten. There is no person more qualified to be Sheriff of Greene County than him. The only one in the ballpark is the outgoing sheriff, Jack Merritt, but he isn’t running.

Snow and Mail

Filed under: Mil Blog — Joel @ 10:17 pm

The real snow has finally made it into the valley here at Bagram (we prefer to call it the Kabul Bowl as opposed to a valley); we had flakes about a month ago, but this is the first measurable snow. Here are a couple of photos for you:

This is SSG Most, my NCOIC, right outside my B-Hut.

Here is the view down Disney Drive, the main drag here at Bagram. (No it isn’t named Disney because it is a fun place to be; like everything else over here, it is named after a Soldier named Disney who was killed in the line of duty over here back in 2003.)

One other note; if you are thinking of sending me any more mail you better do it before Friday if you want me to get it. I don’t need anything, and am not asking you to send anything; if you do send something make sure it can be consumed within a week though. I don’t have room to carry anything else with me, and I don’t want to mail something right back home. Hopefully the snow quits soon so I can get out of here!

New Year’s Resolutions

Filed under: General — Joel @ 8:18 pm

I am not one that is real big for making resolutions, and even when I do I try not to call them such. Two years ago I did begin our financial journey at the beginning of the year; of course last year we just all said “Happy No Year” since we spent our entire year serving the Army putting our lives on hold.

This year Amy has helped me find the solution to something I have always wanted to do yet never took the time to do; read my Bible through in a year. The perfect solution for me is to daily receive the portion I am to read in my Bloglines with my other RSS feeds. No matter how busy I am I always stay up to date on about 40 or so web sites, so adding my daily Bible reading here was a perfect solution for me.

You can join in here, or if you prefer you can read it online here, or just print out the schedule and use your own Bible here. It’s not too late to get started, so go ahead and make 2008 the year you finally read through the Bible in a year; no excuses.

Iowa

Filed under: Politics — Joel @ 11:59 pm

I regret that my overpriced rip off internet service I receive here courtesy of AAFES has not allowed me to write this post until now…but I digress; Iowa was a perfect night on both sides of the aisle as far as I am concerned. There are literally only two candidates I would strongly support, and two I would settle for.

As ironic as it is, the only two I could support are Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama. I know you are sitting there wondering in what universe these two people are equal in my eyes; the answer lies only in my world view I suppose. These two are the only two I have heard over and over again talk about diplomacy to solve our problems in the world. They also talk more about Afghanistan than any of the hawks.

As for the candidates I abhor; at the top of the list is John Edwards. He talks about two Americas as his hypocritical butt lives in the one he claims he wants to eliminate; he is corporate greed. Then there is Hillary; I don’t even need to elaborate here; I think evil says it all. Switching sides, the next one is good old Mitt. I have never seen anyone so fake in my entire life; is he for abortion or against…was he endorsed by the NRA…oh I guess he wasn’t…was he a hunter his entire life…oh I guess not, maybe varmints; fake is the only word I can associate with Romney. Then there is Rudy. How can he even say he is a Republican? His only Republican value is he is a hawk in the sense he wants to blow up the entire Middle East; but only after he gets millions from the terrorists over here that his security company has “consulted” for. Don’t even get me started on his family values…something about he who can not run his household…

So you are asking who the two I could tolerate are…well first is the man who was literally tied up while Woodstock was going on; John McCain. He knows the sacrifice and he knows what it is to commit troops unlike ALL the people that committed us here and in Iraq. He would not have invaded Iraq, but he won’t let us leave the wrong way now that we are there.

And for the other…Ron Paul. While he leaves a lot to be desired in many areas; he is really smart about what the role of government should be. I would rather see Mike, Barack or John; but certainly give me Ron before any of those other jokers!

Happy New Year

Filed under: Mil Blog — Joel @ 12:12 am

It is now 2008 over here in Afghanistan; I brought in the new year watching Air Force and Cal playing in the Armed Forces Bowl while I responded to emails and prepared January’s budget. Sorry I haven’t written much lately, but now that I got all the mail delivered I have changed my focus to re-deployment issues and that is very time consuming. I look forward to leaving Afghanistan and at long last I can say leaving this month.
