You Go To War With the Army You Have

Filed under: General — Joel @ 12:54 pm

I recently read a good post by Mark Cuban on start up companies. In passing Mark talks about empire builders (rule 7) and how they pollute a company. This comment caused me to recall what MAJ Antal told me as I was preparing to go to Afghanistan, “You go to war with the Army you have, not the Army you wish you had.”

In simple terms, real leaders develop the employees they have as opposed to attempting to rid themselves of troublesome workers. In a combat environment your life as a leader literally depends upon how well you have developed those around you. In business your success hinges on the same concept.

No one enjoys operating in an environment where they are constantly wondering which list they are on. If you begin the process of leadership with the understanding that everyone is staying; the mindset that accompanies this line of thought encourages a true leader to constantly improve and develop those around them.

A fake leader who summarily decides to rid themselves of certain people unknowingly pollutes the environment for all at that workplace. Their intention is to run off the bad apples; however, the result is the entire basket begins to rot. This type of kingdom/empire building truly pollutes the entire workplace and will kill productivity and the bottom line. Ultimately it will cause the good apples to leave the basket as they can no longer tolerate the smell.

Whether in business or the military; go to war with the army you have, not the one you wish you had!

Beans and Rice Again

Filed under: Debt — Joel @ 9:58 pm

After goofing off for the better part of a month (mostly budgeted), I can no longer use the excuse I just got home; so this week I tasted my first rice and beans since returning state side. While Amy and Rachel are enjoying the fine dining of Springfield I returned to my pre-mobilization TDY diet of bologna sandwiches, hot dogs and mac & cheese.

After unsuccessfully searching for a Wal-Mart Supercenter Monday night, I arrived at a Kroger in a shady North Little Rock neighborhood. With no other viable options I purchased two weeks of food and beverage including granola bars and fruit for $56. With a daily per diem rate of $54 I will be making out quite nicely, although I must confess; after four days of bologna I forked over $7.40 to the DFAC tonight for BBQ ribs and mashed potatoes. It was quite tasty ;)

Correction by the wife:
While Joel was eating those BBQ ribs, Rachel and I had bologna sandwiches. So Joel… was that barbecued gazelle?

Time Goes By So…

Filed under: General — Joel @ 9:33 pm

Each time I sit down to write a post I tell myself that finally I am caught up to the point that I will be able to start writing every day again…and then a week goes by before my next post.

Tonight I find myself in North Little Rock, Arkansas courtesy of my favorite Army. I am here learning all about property as I will soon assume the duties of Property Book Officer (PBO) for our Regiment (pending one last Hail Mary for a Springfield job). In reading my welcome letter I somehow missed the requirement we had to complete phase 1 of this course via distance learning on the internet prior to the end of week 1. With those 8 hours of fun now behind me I can finally relax for a second.

Coming into North Little Rock was quite the adventure…it was close to nine on Sunday night as I found myself winding through a neighborhood I hoped was safe; Monday morning I found out it really wasn’t that safe. I drove by this robbery/homicide within 5 minutes of its occurrence on my way into Camp Robinson; thankfully I didn’t see anything! I would dread having to return to this city for any reason; especially a trial!

If my Springfield dream doesn’t come true I am looking at a minimum of 7 more weeks away from home between now and the end of September. Miserable just doesn’t even come close…I am questioning if the Army really values families, or just gives it lip service. Yeah, yeah…I signed up for this, I know ;)

Adm Fallon

Filed under: General — Joel @ 7:20 pm

I had the honor of hearing him speak at Bagram last November; I am disappointed to see him leave. I certainly share the philosophy of Robert Gates and Adm Mullen that Adm Fallon imparted. In his talk with us he stressed families and shorter rotations with longer breaks in between.
