After waiting about a month to be seen, I went to the VA Hospital in Columbia today. I must say I was impressed with their service…a week ago this post may not have been as flattering for the VA.
Upon arrival they immediately did my lab work and then sent me away to eat (I had to fast prior to arriving at 1:00 this afternoon). Upon returning I met with a special case worker who handles all OIF/OEF Soldiers. She brought me up to speed on everything the VA offers, ensured I wasn’t suicidal or homicidal and made sure I knew who to call for what and where their offices are located.
After that I met with the doctor for about an hour. It is the longest time I have consecutively spent with a doctor while I was conscious. We reviewed the lab work and determined I don’t have prostate cancer; he is nearly certain I have an intestinal parasite. I have more tests at Ft. Leonard Wood tomorrow to try to confirm that. He said the treatment is really simple if it ends up being the parasite; I hope so!!
Despite waiting for over a month to get the appointment, I have nothing but good things to say about the VA. It was overflowing in every waiting room I walked past, yet everyone seemed to be taken care of in a timely manner. The people working there genuinely care about our vets; what more could a person ask for?

Wow - it sounds like they made great use of your time on this visit. I’m really glad to see that, and hope other vets are getting the same quality care!!

I’ve heard that the VA has definitely stepped up in the service aspect.
If there’s ever a group of people In this country that I don’t mind my tax dollars going to pay for their medical and rehabilitation and assistance to get going in the private sector, it’s the veterans, and doubly-so combat wounded vets.

I have been using the VA in Columbia for 9 years and I have had nothing but great experiences. The physicians have been great and I have nothing but great things to say about the service I have received from them. I think that they are the best in the business.
I hope that you start feeling better.

I have to say the VA Hospital is good; they still have issues in the administrative process of being seen the first time, but once you are in their service is great!!
